چکیده
Background: As COVID-19 disease surges across much of the world, researchers in different settings have a unique opportunity to address various research priorities that been identified. The challenges containment and mitigation strategies present for research, especially resource limited settings, could be significant negatively impact essential contribution these research.
Objectives: To describe experiences conducting during this pandemic, discuss faced implemented challenges
Methods: Malaria Consortium recently initiated an observational case series study assess magnitude clinical consequences co-infection COVID-19, malaria, other common infections. This is being conducted eight treatment centres Uganda. Qualitative methods including observations interviews were utilized document mitigating identified challenges. main outcomes descriptive narrative discussion faced, presentation challenges.
Results: Expedited ethical review approval facilitated timely initiation activities. primary care teams at each centre performed all procedures minimize infection. Given concerns about fomite transmission, considerations arose on how best handle consent forms had signed or thumb-printed by patients ensure both hospital staff not exposed Consenting severely ill mentally impaired was also challenge, when next kin available. Patient compensation done through mobile money/digital platform avoid potential risks associated with cash. Patients, health workers psychosocial anxiety needed addressed.
Conclusions: These demonstrate more adaptable innovative approaches may support implementation activities pandemic. pandemic should spur institutional boards investigators respond emerging updating policies around approvals, modifications methods.
